WHAT IS PHOTONICS? Photonics technology, the practical application of light, is one of the most important enabling technologies of the twenty-first century. Lasers, optics, fiber optics, CD players, holograms, bar-code scanners, LCDs, and satellite imagery are just a few examples of photonics technology. In the same way that electronics changed our lives in the twentieth century, optics will play a critical role in enabling manufacturing, medical, sensing, telecommunications, homeland security, and defense technologies in this century. At Three Rivers Community College, you can study this technology in the Laser and Fiber Optics Associate Degree and Certificate programs. |
