    WHAT IS PHOTONICS? Photonics technology, the practical application of light, is one of the most important enabling technologies of the twenty-first century. Lasers, optics, fiber optics, CD players, holograms, bar-code scanners, LCDs, and satellite imagery are just a few examples of photonics technology. In the same way that electronics changed our lives in the twentieth century, optics will play a critical role in enabling manufacturing, medical, sensing, telecommunications, homeland security, and defense technologies in this century. At Three Rivers Community College, you can study this technology in the Laser and Fiber Optics Associate Degree and Certificate programs.

    The laser and fiber optic laboratories at Three Rivers Community College are supported in part by grants from the National Science Foundation and from generous donations from our industry partners. Curriculum development for distance learning courses was supported by the Connecticut Distance Learning Consortium and the Regional Center for Next Generation Manufacturing.
